'Dreamlands' is anthology of images documenting the transient and intangible world of television. The pictorial elements, taken from video are translated into the painted medium: the fleeting image seen flickering on TV screens the world over takes on a new reality. This partly banal pictorial iconography could have both cryptic and documentary significance to the future as we have no way of telling how our mass- media based culture will survive the centuries. The paintings (screenshots), exhibited in the manner of a TV-wall are interchangeable or 'zappable'. The result is a fast-moving, picture- zapping, hybrid image-attack reflecting all aspects of global existence. Utopian dreams, disturbing realities, banalities and absurdities interact creating new tensions and allowing new interpretations to arise. 'Dreamlands' is an attempt to redefine a symbiology in danger of stagnation. The iconology is left at the discretion of the viewer under the premise it is not the voice that commands the story but the ear. We are thus challenged to give up our passive role of 'watching' and to actively deal with today's image overload. 1100 Madison Avenue New York, |
