urbs aus rauch

starting point for the work is an enlarged part of a black-and-white newspaper photo which shows a landscape from an airplane perspec-tive. at the top margin of the photo one discovers some houses. smoke rises. houses of the city Janiciste seem to disappear in the smoke.
”urbs aus rauch” points at the problem of visual information reception and asks whether the analysis of media pictures can be useful for the reproduction of reality.
the pixels, extracted and enlarged from the general context, were scaled and interpreted in such a way that another urban structure seemed to develop. according to its basic form each single square picture was given a multiplier which determined the height of the three dimensional pixel. in this case, height is to surface as 1:1.5.
these are the results of this transformation – a ”picture concrete architectona”. the transfor- mation of world into smoke and later on into a technical picture leads at the end again to a concrete physical space experience.
"while the top of the square pixel closes the narrow channel of media information, its reverse side serves as mighty foundation of the spatial growth in the real world … we saw that the surfaces of the photos had stopped to be pictures, instead they became buildings that could be walked around like a house."

the ground plans for the lobster pixels were developed in cooperation with the architect markus busch. the plans show a structure on basis of a dwelling module.
